Dark chocolate-brown, brownish-grey or brownish-black. Elongated eel-shaped. Flattened snake-like head. Very short snout. Large terminal mouth with widely spaced, needle-sharp, slender three-cusped teeth. Six pairs of curved gill slits, lower ends of first pair connected under throat. Dorsal fin low and much smaller than anal fin. Pectoral fins smaller then pelvic fin.

Distribution and Biology ;
Widely but patchily distributed world-wide, rare to uncommon, usually in deep water. Ovoviviparous. Feeds on deepwater actively swimming squid and fishes.

Fishery :
IUCN Red List: Near Threatened. Bycatch of deep bottom trawls and gillnets. Utilized for fishmeal and meat.
