Unmistakable huge filter-feeder with checkerboard pattern of yellow or white spots on grey, bluish or greenish-brown back (white or yellowish underside). Broad, flat head, short snout, huge transverse almost terminal mouth in front of eyes. Prominent ridges on body, lowest ending in a keel on the caudal peduncle. Lunate, unnotched tail fin.

Distribution and Biology ;
Circumglobal, all tropical and warm temperate seas except Mediterranean. Oviviparous. A female from Taiwan had ~300 pups in her uterus. Feeds on planktonic crustaceans and fish eggs.

Fishery :
IUCN Red List: Vulnerable. Has been fished for meat, apparently unsustainably, in many areas. Sttep declines in yields reported from the Philippines, Taiwan, Maldives and India. Legally protected in many states. Listed on CITES Appendix II.
