Identification:
Color variable, darker above than below, often with mottled pattern on back and sides, white blotches under head. Unmistakeable very large shark. Pointed snout, huge mouth with tiny teeth, huge gill slits almost encircle the head. Strong lateral keels on caudal peduncle, lunate tail.

Distribution and Biology ;
World-wide, cold to warm-temperature water. Poorly known plankton-feeder. Huge liver provides buoyancy. One litter of six pups reported, presumably oophagous.

Fishery :
IUCN Red List: Vulnerable. Endangered regionally, where seriously depleted by target fisheries for oil, meat and fins. Listed on CITES Appendix II, protected by several countries and in the Mediterranean.
